Back in the old days when my friends were drinking Screwdrivers for special occasions I was swapping the orange juice for grapefruit juice and vodka for gin. Now we’d call that a Greyhound – back then I didn’t have a fun name for it. Lately I’ve read a bunch of references to Combier’s Crème de Pamplemousse Rose which is a blend of red grapefruit and neutral alcohol resulting in the freshest of grapefruit flavors all year long (pamplemousse is French for grapefruit). This inspired me to make a more modern version of my old standby.

To begin with I started with a higher quality gin than I used to use. My favorite is Hendick’s but any good gin will do. Add in some Crème de Pamplemousse Rose in place of regular grapefruit juice and some fresh lime juice. Finish it off with a dash of orange or grapefruit bitters. The result is a very refreshing grapefruit cocktail that you can make at any time of the year.

For those of you (like me) who call Pennsylvania home… you can special order this delightful liqueur through the PA Fine Wine & Good Spirits website. They will either deliver it to a store you designate or to your home (someone over 21 years of age has to sign for it). L’Original Combier Liqueur d’Orange is widely available in the stores and is known as the original “triple sec” in case you’d like to try another Combier product.
