Shrimp and Corn Boil

Going to a real New England clam bake is on my bucket list. I think I must have read about one as a child and while I’m far into adulthood, the closest I’ve gotten to going to one was years ago when Rhode Islander Ken D (a dear friend and former colleague) ordered a clam bake in a pot that he had shipped to Pennsylvania for a party. While the food was great it wasn’t quite the same the same as dining at the ocean. [Read more…]

Sausage, Kale and Rainbow Chard Pasta

I’d call this a “compromise pasta” in our house. Ed’s not so sure about kale, so I figured that if I mixed it with Italian hot sausage (which he loves) that I might have a chance of getting away with it. I didn’t even try to sneak in turkey sausage, he’s a true Italian and knows the difference. [Read more…]

Peas and Garlic Scapes Sauté

I can never get enough garlic (much to Ed’s dismay) and enjoy in it all forms. However my preference is when it takes on a mellower flavor, such as roasted garlic. I was first introduced to another mild alternative – garlic scapes – a few years ago at Growing Roots’ Farmers Market in Malvern, PA. [Read more…]

French Lentils with Sausage and Fennel

I recently hosted a farmers market themed Gourmet Dinner Club (GDC). I asked that everyone bring something that contained at least one ingredient from a local farmers market (emphasis on “local”). [Read more…]

Burrata and Tomato Salad

I was like a kid in a candy store this past Saturday at the Malvern (PA) Farmers Market. There were a few different stands selling tomatoes but when I saw that the Kimberton CSA (the first CSA in Pennsylvania) had sorted their cherry tomatoes into bins so you could make your own mixture I knew that I had to go to their stand. [Read more…]

Farmers Market Succotash

Growing up lima beans were a very unwelcome vegetable in the house. They were my stepfather, Mark J’s, least favorite vegetable so we never had them at the dinner table. Both he and my mom grew up with mothers who, let’s just say, were not gourmet chefs so I can only assume that the lima beans of their youth came from a can (enough said). [Read more…]

Strawberry-Mint Sparkler

Farmers market season is upon us. I’m thrilled that my favorite local farmers market in Malvern, PA will be opening this coming weekend. That means that local strawberry season is just around the corner and I’m excited to to make another batch of this wonderful Strawberry-Mint Syrup that I first made last strawberry season. [Read more…]

Strawberry-Mint Syrup

I am very excited about the start of the outdoor local farmers market season. When they open that means that we get access to lots of wonderful locally produced fruit and vegetables (along with meats, cheese, baked goods and so much more). [Read more…]

Visit to the Delmar Farmers’ Market

We recently gathered in Delmar, NY (a suburb of Albany) for a Powers/Packer family reunion and the whole family made the trek to the Delmar Farmers’ Market to get a bit of local flavor. One of my favorite things to do when I travel is to go to food stores or farmers’ markets as you never know what tasty things you will find. [Read more…]
